Multiple collisions restrict Edinburgh city bypass as commuters face rush hour chaos

A section of the A720 Edinburgh bypass is currently restricted to westbound traffic due to two multi-vehicle collisions.

It is understood that both incidents occurred shortly after 5pm with westbound traffic restricted just after Baberton and queues currently stretching as far as Straiton.

Traffic Scotland alerted motorists to the incident on Twitter, saying: "UPDATE 17:41 A720 Calder Restricted Westbound between Baberton and Calder due to a multi vehicle collision. Traffic slowing on the approach this afternoon.

It is currently unclear how many cars are involved in both accidents or if there are any injuries.

Images from the scene show westbound traffic queuing in the area as both collisions occurred in the midst of Monday's rush hour traffic.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh commuters using the M8 in West Lothian are facing delays due to a "serious" incident as emergency services have closed the motorway heading westbound between junction 4A and 5.

Road Policing Scotland tweeted an image from the scene showing the road blocked off and said the incident is '"serious" with traffic being diverted via 4A Heartlands, B7066 Harthill and re-joining the M8 at Junction 5.

Live traffic cameras from the scene show huge tailbacks starting to form around Harthill for westbound traffic, as well as queues stretching as far as Whitburn.

Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
