Multi-million-pound expansion of Rushcliffe school planned to meet pupil demand

An expansion of a school in Rushcliffe is planned to meet increasing pupil demand in the area. Nottinghamshire County Council said it is “currently investigating several options” to deliver sufficient secondary school places in the West Bridgford area.

It said one of these options is to expand the South Wolds Academy in Keyworth by increasing the maximum number of pupils allowed in each year group from 150 to 170. The project will be funded with a maximum of £700,000 from the council’s budget, as well as section 106 contributions from developers in the area.

The council said the move would “ease pressure in the area” but despite this, “there will still be a significant shortfall of secondary places” in the area which is home to Rushcliffe Spencer Academy, West Bridgford School and South Wolds Academy. A multi-million-pound expansion of the Rushcliffe Spencer Academy will see an additional 560 secondary school places created as well as a new sports facility.

The proposed expansion at South Wolds Academy includes construction of a new building with five classrooms, an IT suite, common room, a quiet area and pastoral space. Council documents stated: “Even with this project delivered by 2023, there will still be a significant shortfall of secondary places in the pupil place planning area.

“The Council is therefore looking to work with other schools in the planning area, to identify other options for creating new spaces.” The funding will be granted to East Midlands Education Trust (EMET) which will deliver the project.

The designs of the proposed expansion have been approved by Rushcliffe Borough Council.
