Much-loved restaurant closes warning 'it won't be the last' to shut amid rising costs

A MUCHED-LOVED cafe and restaurant next to a busy dual carriageway has closed, with its owners warning that it “won’t be the last” venue to shut amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Angus Larder and Grill at Balnabriech was a popular eatery for those travelling on the A90 near Brechin since it opened two years ago.

In an announcement on social media, the restaurant said rising costs, increased national insurance and growing energy prices were among the reasons for the decision and that it shut its doors for the final time on Tuesday.

The eatery also warned that they are not the first businesses to close this week and that it “won’t be the last”.

The post on Facebook read: “It is with a heavy heart that today we closed our wonderful Brechin restaurant, Angus Grill and Larder.

“Angus Grill has been a staple of the Brechin area for over two years now, serving commuters, holidaymakers and locals alike, all while offering a larder filled with local produce and spirits.

“Growing costs, rising rates, increased NI (national insurance), higher energy and a constant bombardment of taxes on brick and mortar businesses made our operating costs simply too high.

“We’re not the first this week and we won’t be the last.”

Chef manager Kieran Turner opened the roadside venue back in January 2022 alongside Will Macpherson.

The pair renovated the former Bonnybreich Coffee Bothy into a cafe and restaurant with the aim to serve local produce.

The post on Facebook ended by saying: “We want to thank the staff with all our hearts and are working towards helping them secure new employment.”
