MSP calls for summit talks over the future of Ayr Ice Rink

An MSP has today appealed for all stakeholders to get round the table for talks over the future of Ayr Ice Rink.

Ayrshire Live previously revealed how the rink in Limekiln Road, will close its doors later this year after owners blamed an “unprecedented hike in energy costs.”

In the wake of the shock announcement a petition against the closure plan was set up and it has more than 10,000 signatures already.

Now South Scotland Labour List MSP, Carol Mochan, has revealed she’s met with ice rink owners to see if a way forward can be found.

She said her talks with Ayrshire Curlers Ltd, the rink owners, were “constructive” but warned that all parties must get together so that solutions can be found.

Ms Mochan was also told how the club’s new energy arrangements will cause utility bills to rise from £419 a day, to £880.

Commenting after the meeting late last week, Ms Mochan said: “The meeting was very constructive and I thank all of the members of Ayr Curling Club for inviting me.

“We cannot afford to lose yet another Ayrshire institution, especially in its 50th year.

“We have curling stones made in Mauchline from granite quarried on Ailsa Craig, to the possibility of not having an active curling club in the heart of Ayrshire’s most famous town. It is a travesty.

“All parties must get round the table to call for the rescue of Ayr Curling Club and the ice rink in general, which is used by all.”

The hammer blow affects scores of curlers, skaters and ice hockey players, who all relied on the rink to train, compete and practice their skills.

Ms Mochan added: “Inaction is not an option – we risk decimating a facet of sporting success in the South of Scotland if this closes.

“My team will be considering how best we can continue to support the club over the coming days and weeks.”
