Mrs Hinch fans say household item causes limescale in kettles to 'vanish instantly'

Most households have a kettle, which means limescale is an issue many people will experience, especially if they live in a location with hard water. When hard water evaporates it leaves behind a substance of calcium and magnesium, which is known as limescale.

Although this is completely harmless, most people will want to regularly clean their kettle to avoid floating flakes of limescale in their drinks. One woman struggling to clean her kettle took to the Mrs Hinch Facebook page in her effort to find a successful solution to the limescale, reports The Daily Express.

Elaine Dara wrote: “Any help to descale a kettle? I’ve tried the sachets and they’ve not worked.”

There are a range of products available which have been specially designed to remove kettle limescale, but not all of these are proven to be effective and some of them can be quite expensive. Fellow group members comments suggested in the comments that Elaine revert to using something she most likely already has, white vinegar.

Charlene Tucker wrote: “White vinegar and boil, did mine this morning, was shocked as it worked first time.” Amy Jones commented: “I think I actually saw this tip on here.

"Add equal amounts of white vinegar and water to the kettle and boil up. Certainly did the job for me. Thank you to whoever recommended this.” Debbie Wilson added: “Boil the kettle with white vinegar and water. No need to let it soak.

“I did my kettle last week and the bottom of it was covered in thick limescale. I boiled water with white vinegar and water and it vanished instantly.

“Don’t bother wasting money on expensive descaling products when white vinegar is cheap and effective.” Christine Powell stated: “Empty kettle of water, then pour white vinegar in from Tesco 29p or anywhere else you can find it.

“Switch kettle on for it to boil then take it off the kettle base and watch as the vinegar has done its magic. Empty the kettle and put fresh water in, boil and empty. That's it, all the limescale wIll have disappeared.”

In response to Christine, Shelly Barker wrote: “Best and cheapest way. I always do ours like this.” Joyce Finch added: “Totally agree, it’s brilliant. Best I’ve ever used on my kettle.”

Jade Wells commented: “Cup of vinegar and a cup of water, boil it and it gets rid of everything. You’ll just have to boil water in it once or twice before using it again.” Dawn Tomlin said: “White distilled vinegar will do the trick. Add water halfway then add 200ml in the kettle and boil.”

Acid is a good hard water stain remover, which is why white vinegar is an important ingredient to include in a homemade descaler. Another method suggested by Mrs Hinch fans was citric acid.

Sandra Read said: “Two teaspoons of citric acid in hot water, it’s brilliant.” Anita Martos Trusz wrote: “Citric acid is the best. It doesn't smell and fizz up like vinegar and it's cheap.”

Carlie Adams added: “Citric acid, pour in kettle, add water, put to the boil and it will be gone.”
