Mrs Hinch fans say 'game-changing' £1 kitchen staple keeps lettuce 'fresh for ages'

We all know we should eat plenty of veggies every day, but sometimes it can be difficult to use up the fresh produce we buy before it starts going off - leading us to chuck away half-eaten cabbage and broccoli that's been barely touched.

But thanks to fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, there might actually be a way to keep our greens fresh for even longer, meaning we'll have more time to use them and stop throwing them in the bin.

One of the most notorious veggies for going brown and limp in record time is lettuce, and cleaning fans claim there's a £1 kitchen item that could make the salad staple stay fresh "for ages" - and you probably already have some to hand.

The advice was given to one woman on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips page on Facebook after she asked: "I know this isn't a cleaning tip but does anyone have any tips to keep bags of lettuce (namely Iceberg) fresher for longer in the fridge? [I'm] fed up of it turning brown so soon."

Members of the group were quick to respond, with many suggesting that putting a few sheets of kitchen roll in the bag with her lettuce is a "game-changer" when it comes to salad preservation.

One person said: "I take mine out of any plastic wrapping and wrap it in kitchen roll. It's the damp that makes them go off."

While another added: "Put a paper towel in the bag, game changer."

And a third wrote: "Wrap it up in kitchen roll and put it in the freezer bag and keep it in a salad drawer at the bottom of the fridge. It lasts ages."

Most of us will have kitchen rolls at home already, but if you don't, you can pick it up for as little as £1 for one roll from Tesco, while one roll from Wilko is £2, and a pack of six from Waitrose for £6 - or £1 each.

And if kitchen roll isn't your thing, other commenters suggested different methods to keep lettuce fresh, such as using kitchen foil, cling film, and even not cutting it with a knife.

Someone wrote: "Buy a head of lettuce and wrap it in foil, it keeps for weeks."

As someone else stated: "Tear off leaves rather than cutting it with a knife," to which another agreed as they said: "Don't use a metal knife. This is what turns it brown."
