Mrs Hinch fan shares 47p trick to tackling tough toilet limescale - without scrubbing

A cleaning enthusiast has recommended a super simple and affordable way of ridding your toilet bowl of tough-to-tackle limescale, all without the need to reach for your scrubbing brush. The Mrs Hinch fan shared the hack on a household tips Facebook page, suggesting it as a thrifty alternative to pricey shop-bought cleaning products.

Limescale is a hard, chalky substance made up mostly of calcium and magnesium, and can be found in any place where hard water has evaporated, from shower heads to dishwashers to toilets. As well as being unsightly, it can also lead to your pipes getting clogged up, meaning you shouldn't delay in taking action.

A woman currently facing this often frustrating household task recently took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, seeking advice on how to banish 'disgusting' limescale from her friend's loo bowl.

She wrote: “Disgusting toilet bowl. My friend has just moved to a new place. We have done everything I can think of to clean her toilet but the bowl has some brown dirt we can't remove... Any tips?”

A number of fellow domestic whizzes suggested shop-bought products such as Harpic Black and Domestos Zero Limescale Remover, while others swore by soap stones and brillo pads. However, one solution will perhaps surprise a number of people: good old-fashioned Coca-Cola.

One resourceful person advised: "A large bottle of Coca-Cola, pour it down the loo, and leave for at least 24 hrs! Flush and scrub with a stiff toilet brush."

Another agreed: "Pour a Litre of Coca-Cola in the loo and leave overnight. Clean up the rest with Dettol spray."

Coke is an acidic compound that contains citric and phosphoric acid, and so is very effective when trying to dissolve limescale. Best of all, you won't even need to buy the higher-end products, with a third commenter revealing they'd found a 47p bottle from Aldi to work like a charm.
