Mrs Brown’s Boys star Fiona O’Carroll reveals why new series was scrapped in update on show's future

Mrs Brown’s Boys star Fiona O’Carroll has revealed why there will be no new season this year.

The actress, who plays Maria Brown, addressed the rumour that a new season would debut in 2022.

New episodes were said to have been recorded back in April but Fiona revealed that the idea of a mini series was scrapped.

“We were supposed to be doing a mini series this year but, unfortunately, due to various different reasons it didn’t happen. So, there is talk of it happening next year, a possible mini series,” she told Ireland AM.

She pointed out that the struggle to get studio time and pin down the cast post pandemic was partly to blame.

“It is not just down to us, it is down to studio time, it is down to crew and it is down to cast,” she said.

“With Covid, it was a massively turbulent time and there is huge backlog and all artists and productions are fighting for time and space.

“It is hard to get that time to make stuff and get a slot. Yes, there is talk but whether it happens, I don't know.”

Although they won’t be back on our screens just yet, the cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys will be taking to the stage in the 3Arena this November.

She told hosts Alan Hughes and Muireann O'Connell: “We are doing a UK tour in June and we are in Dublin in November. I am going to be flat out this year, which is great.

“After not working for so long, I am like ‘Oh my God, this is brilliant.’ I am going straight from the UK tour of Mrs Brown’s Boys into Coppers The Musical for a five week tour,” she said.

Despite setbacks, the Christmas and New Year’s specials of the show are still planned to go ahead as usual.
