An MRI done Monday on Jordan Love’s new injury revealed a minor groin strain, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Green Bay Packers quarterback is expected to get treatment and be monitored throughout this week, but a major injury has now been ruled out.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Love is considered day to day and will still have a shot at playing Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Love suffered the injury on the first drive of the Packers’ win over the Jacksonville. He came up gimpy following an extended play in which he threw downfield while scrambling to his right. Love remained in the game for the next two quarters, but his movement was severely limited and the Packers eventually removed him after got bumped following a throw on the first drive of the second half.
The Packers play the Lions in a major NFC North battle on Sunday at Lambeau Field. Even if Love practices in any capacity this week, he’s likely headed towards a game-time decision come Sunday. Green Bay has the bye week in Week 10, so if Love sits on Sunday, he’ll get a full three weeks to recover before playing the Chicago Bears coming out of the bye on Nov. 17.
The Packers’ backup quarterback is Malik Willis, who won both of his starts in place of Love earlier this season and led a game-winning drive on Sunday in Jacksonville.
Love missed starts in Week 2 and Week 3 while recovering from a sprained MCL in his left knee.
Coach Matt LaFleur is scheduled to address the media later Monday. He’ll likely be able to confirm that Love avoided a long-term injury.
The Packers are also awaiting test results on cornerback Jaire Alexander, who appeared to suffer a knee injury late on Sunday. Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Alexander is also having an MRI on Monday.
