An eBay user who bid a whopping £62,000 for an original Mr Blobby costume has reportedly backed out of the sale.
The piece of TV history, which is more than 25 years old, attracted massive interest last week after it was put on the auction site by its creator who made it for the BBC.
The bidding climbed as high as £62,101 but the buyer balked at the deal after they won, pulling out of the sale just an hour after placing the eye-watering bid.
The anonymous seller told the BBC: "I thought it would get to a level of £100 perhaps - and so I was shocked really that it reached the level it did.
"I think it was one of those things that was driven by social media.
"Ironically, it was being sold not to make money but to make space."
In the listing for the item, the seller explains they worked making props and costumes for the BBC, with the Mr Blobby costume destined for an overseas version of the BAFTA-winning Noel's House Party TV show.
However the show was canceled before the massive costume could be delivered leaving the unwanted suit it propped in a corner of the creator’s property for years until a house move forced them to sell it in order to make space.
The aged costume has cracked glassy eyes and perishing rubber around the edges, hardly an item worth tens of thousands, but perhaps a fan of 90s nostalgia somewhere can help the hapless owner get rid of it for a more reasonable sum.
The listing on eBay reads: “This was made by the BBC's costume supplier for an overseas version of Noel's House Party.
“Unfortunately before it could be delivered the overseas show was cancelled and neither the broadcaster or the BBC's production team wanted it - so it sat in my office until a move meant it came home with me some years ago.”
The description takes a turn as it then warns of the less than pristine condition of the item.
It states: “This costume is made of foam rubber covered with a rubber type material with a shoulder support. Consequently as it is now over 25 years old, there is the inevitable ageing to the foam and the rubberised coating.
“This means it is less suitable to be worn as the unit is not very supple as it was in 1996.
“In addition the two arms require re-attaching to the body, one of the plastic eye is cracked and the bow tie will need securing.”
The seller adds: “Overall it's not too bad for its age - but there is visible creasing and dust to the covering and some areas require a drop of glue to make good.”
They add: “This is an iconic Television character from one of the most popular TV shows of the 1990's He's been with me all this time - but now a house move means I need to find him a new home.”
While a final warning states: “Mr Blobby is trademarked, and therefore subject to copyright.
“This costume/prop can only be for personal home display use. There can be no unauthorised use - including but not limited to hiring out, lending, public exhibition or any performances.”
