Mpox: Infectious disease expert on how concerned we should be ...Tech & Science Daily podcast

Listen here on your chosen podcast platform.

Monkeypox is continuing to make global headlines so Tech & Science Daily have called on an expert to explain everything we know so far about the outbreak.

Michael Marks, professor of medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and consultant in infectious diseases at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London, reveals how concerned we should be about the virus.

Last week the World Health Organisation declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of the latest mpox variant in several African nations, there has also been one confirmed case in Sweden and another in Pakistan.

Despite the alarming numbers seen in Africa, Professor Marks says that we shouldn’t be too concerned in the UK as it stands and explains why.

The European Space Agency's Juice spacecraft is to pass over Earth in a ‘world first’ fly-by.

Ben Dryer, Research Fellow at The Open University’s Centre for Electronic Imaging - who worked on Juice’s JANUS camera - discusses the significance of the fly-by and reveals where we’re up to with the mission.

The spacecraft launched back in April 2023 on a 4.1 billion-mile journey which will take more than eight years.

From around 11.57pm tonight - Monday 19th August - into the early hours of Tuesday, the agency says a double world first will take place with the lunar-Earth fly-by and the double gravity assist manoeuvre.

Even the slightest mistake could take the spacecraft off course and mean the end of the mission.

And the rest
