Worsley and Eccles South MP Barbara Keeley has hit out at the government over its use of ‘regressive’ taxation to fund adult social care.
Speaking in the Commons on Monday, Ms Keeley criticised the local government finance settlement which determines the ‘spending power’ of councils for the 2022/23 financial year.
She noted this did not reverse the ‘decade of cuts’ which has seen Salford council stripped of 53pc of its budget since 2010/11.
Nor, she claimed, did it do enough to meet the £7.6m cost of national insurance contributions, national minimum wage and inflation.

But, the ‘most critical pressure’ is on adult social care, ‘where the council is facing both increasing demand and cost’, she told the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee.
She added: “How on earth can councils be expected to deliver vital social care services adequately when this government’s solution is to make councils fund it from regressive tax.
"Taxes like council tax and the social care levy of up to 14pc”.
