Mozambique's elections: What's at stake?

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

Polls have closed and ballot counting has begun in Mozambique. Some 17 million people were registered to vote for presidential and parliamentary elections. President Filipe Nyusi is stepping down after eight years in office and four candidates are vying for the hot seat.

Also, where is Cameroon's president? Social media had been buzzing with speculation about the health and whereabouts of Paul Biya, who has not been seen in public since September. But authorities insist the 91-year-old is in excellent health. He has been staying in the Swiss city of Geneva and could return home soon.

Finally, DR Congo continues to carry out its national vaccination campaign against mpox. The country remains the global epicentre of the virus, recording more than 30,000 suspected cases and near a thousand deaths since the start of the year. The rollout that started over the weekend comes as a particularly virulent new strain, known as clade 1b, is spreading exponentially. DR Congo has only received 265,000 vaccines and health authorities say a mass campaign won't be possible.
