Mowgli Street Food shares update after moving into listed Bristol building

Popular Indian street food chain Mowgli has shared an update on the progress of its new Bristol site. Mowgli is making headway on its restaurant in Bristol's Old City after moving into a Grade II-listed building, formerly home to Pizza Express.

It reaffirmed its plans for its new restaurant on Corn Street earlier this year after hitting delays during Covid and issues with sourcing planning permission. In a new update, the restaurant group said the Bristol opening is on track for either a summer or autumn opening.

Pictures reveal the 'bones' of the early 19th-century building that was once a bank along with an impressive chandelier, but will require 'lots of TLC and time' to open. Heritage England also states the building has retained a very rare and notable example of a late medieval vaulted undercroft.

On Instagram, the restaurant group - which has 126,000 followers - said: "Bristol Mowgli update! Here she is. Don’t you love her madly…Well I do - I love the bones of this big old demanding listed building dowager and she will take lots of TLC and time but we aim to open this summer/autumn.

"Do you like the graphite and gold panelling I have been playing with in the last photo? I’m braver with Mowgli than I could ever be in my own life in so many ways."

Mowgli founder Nisha Katona built the business by replicating true Indian street food and home cooking, now with 15 restaurants in the portfolio and three more in the pipeline. She is also currently working as a judge on the BBC's The Great British Menu alongside chef Tom Kerridge and food podcast host Ed Gamble.
