Movie night and 'clothes drive' to help those in need this winter

A charity movie night and clothes drive is taking place to help support people during the cost of living crisis.

With energy prices soaring and temperatures dropping rapidly, community group The Open Invite has organised the event to support those who need a helping hand getting through this winter. It will be held on December 8 at Bloom Building and Coffee, Birkenhead. The evening will consist of hot chocolate, snuggling up to a classic Christmas movie, raising money for charity, and helping members of the community through the clothes drive.

Sharing the news on Instagram, The Open Invite said: "This winter we have decided to put on our very own clothes drive. This Christmas period, people are needing our help more than ever with bills rapidly going up and temperatures dropping everyday. We also know most of you will be in the midst of swapping out your wardrobe for some new winter clothes."

Tickets are available to buy on Skiddle and priced at £7, with the proceeds donated to The Charles Thompson Mission, which has been providing support, food, and clothes to those living in poverty on the Wirral. There will also be a drop-off spot at the Bloom Building for donated clothes.

The Charles Thompson Mission have urged that they are particularly in need of children’s and babies' clothes, men’s pants size 30-34, womenswear, and men’s shoes - however no donation is too small.

The movie being screened on the night is to be decided via Instagram by Open Invites followers. The Open Invite will be accepting requests via direct message, followed by a poll to decide the winner. With family favourites such as Elf and Polar Express in the running, you can head over to their Instagram page @open.invite_ to suggest your favourite Christmas movie.

Hope Crabtree, co-founder of Open Invite said: “I think it is a brilliant way to bring the community together through helping the most vulnerable.”

The Open Invite is a support group whose mission is to create a safe space for women and the LGBTQA+ community, whilst raising funds for local charities. Initially named Walking with Women, weekly walks are what kick-started Open Invite.

The founders of have been organising weekly walks around various parts of the Wirral, giving women a chance to make friends and discuss their mental health. The support group has since grown, organizing successful women empowerment nights with guest speakers and various other fundraising events.

The Open Invite plans to continue raising funds for charities within the community. Libby Gregory, co-founder of Open Invite said: “I am so proud of what we have achieved so far, being able to offer a safe space for people to talk as well as raise money for important and essential charities has been so rewarding. We plan to keep building our support group and expanding our reach in the community.”
