Mourners wear bright colours for 'beautiful' woman, 22, killed after car mounted kerb

Mourners dressed in bright colours to remember a 22-year-old student who was killed in a car crash.

Mourners gathered at the funeral of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) student Rebecca Steer, 22, who died on October 9 after a car mounted a kerb. Rebecca died after she and a second pedestrian were struck by the car outside the Grill Out takeaway in Oswestry, Shropshire at around 2.50am.

Stephen McHugh, 27, has denied murder and is due to go on trial on April 19 next year. McHugh, of Artillery Road, Park Hall, is also charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a man injured in the same incident.

Yesterday, Tuesday, November 15 around a hundred mourners gathered for a service at St Agatha's church in Rebecca's home village of Llanymynech. Rebecca, believed to have been studying criminal justice at LJMU, was also a Liverpool FC fan.

Rebecca's family described her as "the most loving, talented and kind hearted person you could ever wish to know". The family said in a tribute: "We are all completely devastated by the loss of our beautiful girl Rebecca. She always had a smile and a laugh that made everybody love her.

"She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. She was the best daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend anyone could ask for. Rest in peace beautiful girl."

A fundraising page was set up for Rebecca's family following her death. The page, created to "assist the Steer family at this time of deep sadness", has raised nearly £9,000 since it was started last month.

The fundraising page was set up by family friend Duncan Borthwick who said Rebecca would be "dearly missed by the village". Mr Borthwick told BBC Radio Shropshire : "She was a wonderful young girl who had her whole life ahead of her - she was a joy to be around.

"She was a very popular resident - it was deeply affected everyone, it is just a tragedy." Mr Borthwick has also helped raise money with the aim of setting up the Rebecca Steer Community Awards to "keep her memory alive" and "keep the good work going".
