Jose Mourinho has never been one to shy away from the big occasion, and the Fenerbahce boss is relishing the challenge of facing Rangers in the Europa League last 16.
As the Turkish giants prepare to welcome Barry Ferguson’s side to Istanbul on Thursday, Mourinho spoke with admiration for both halves of Glasgow’s footballing divide, highlighting his deep respect for the city’s two major clubs and their passionate fanbases.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United manager, known for his vast European experience, acknowledged the task ahead against a Rangers team - who have saved their best performances for this competition - but made it clear he is eager to lock horns with a Scottish opponent.
Mourinho achieved his first major European success in 2003 when he led Porto to victory over Celtic in the UEFA Cup final. He has since shared insights about his special relationship with Rangers fans that developed from that memorable win in Seville.
“Not in Turkey, because in Turkey, I didn't meet yet any Scottish person,” Mourinho said when asked if he has encountered any Old Firm fans since taking the Fenerbahce job in June 2024.
“Maybe tonight or maybe tomorrow. But yes, it's true.
“In London, especially in London, or in the south of Portugal in the summertime, it's true. Some Rangers fans have come to me. But of course, for me, it was a big final. It was my first European final. But I have the utmost respect for both big clubs and big supporter families.

“Celtic and Rangers are two big clubs, incredible history, also in Europe, and I have lots of respect.
“Part of my formation was even in Scotland. I have so many Scottish friends from both colours; the green and the blue.
“I know it’s going to be difficult but I’m really happy to play against a Scottish team. I’m very happy to go to Scotland next week and play at Ibrox.”
