A new film from the creator of Succession has been released, and fans do not have long to wait.
Four super-rich pals meet for an indulgent boys’ trip in the snowy wonderland, but things do not stay idyllic for long.
While away on a long weekend, their world starts to implode, with markets crashing and the US President calling to ask some uncomfortable questions.
Starring Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef , the foursome are worth nearly half a trillion dollars in the HBO flick named Mountainhead.
The official trailer has been released and shows the four titans of the tech world initially meeting in a luxurious snowy retreat, preparing for a weekend of fun. But their poker games, skiing and snowmobile joyrides are cut short when chaos erupts around the world.
Steve Carell plays Randall, Schwartzman is Hugo Van Yalk, known to his pals as ‘Souper’ while Ramy Youssef is Jeff.
Cory Michael Smith is the fourth in the group and plays the “richest man in the world” named Venis who runs a “racist and s****y” social media platform.
In the trailer, the group references the fact the president of the United States wants to talk to them as nations start falling, violence starts to escalate around the globe and stock markets start to tank.
“What could he possibly have to say?” asks Smith.
Youssef responds: “That your platform has inflamed a volatile situation, circulating unfalsifiable deepfakes, massive fraud, market instability?”
In the background, TVs can be seen showing worrying news headlines such as “Sectarian Violence Escalates in India” and “President of Uzbekistan Forced to Move to Secret Location”.
As things worsen, the film looks at their behaviour and how they act as they realise the world imploding also affects them.
Carrell says at one point: “This is a serious moment. I think that is why I’m so excited about these atrocities. I’m thinking about all of the people who are not killing each other.”
Succession writer Jesse Armstrong wrote and directed the film, with filming starting in March meaning there has only been a couple of months turnaround for editing the film before its imminent release.
When is it out and how can I watch it in the UK?
The film comes out on May 31 in the US on HBO and HBO Max, but in the UK Mountainhead will air on Sky and streaming service NOW on June 1.
