Mountain rescue teams race to Scot with fractured leg and ankle after horror fall on mountain

A Scots hill runner who fractured his leg and tore ligaments in his ankle was saved from a mountain during treacherous conditions.

Robin Smith, from Aberdour in Fife, was out with colleagues on Sunday (February 13) morning when he hurt himself just near the top of West Lomond.

Mountain rescue teams Ochil Mountain Rescue Team and the Coastguard, scrambled to help the hill runner stranded in freezing and extremely wet conditions.

He has been left with torn ligaments and a misaligned ankle joint that may need pinning, as well as a fractured fibula bone, but medics need to undertake further examinations to fully access the damage.

Robin was stretchered down the mountain side by the rescue team and shared a "heartfelt thank you" to those who came to his aid.

Kev Mitchell, from Ochil MRT, told the Record: "The conditions were quite poor so it was essential that we got to the casualty as soon as we could, considering her injuries were very serious.

"A team of 12 of us were involved in the rescue. We were mobilised at 11.10am and we got to the casualty by midday.

"The casualty was almost at the top of West Lomond so it was not easy at all.

"Thankfully we had a team doctor on the scene quickly.

"It was extremely windy and wet so really no flying weather, but our colleagues from the Coastguard expertly managed to land a helicopter, before we got the casualty down the hill to the point the helicopter could land and fly straight to hospital."

The Coastguard's Rescue 199 was launched from Prestwick to assist and Robin was taken to Ninewells Hospital at 1pm.

Other hillwalkers have been praised for their contributions who stopped and helped keep the hill runner warm until assistance arrived.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ""We were made aware of an injured man on West Lomond Hill in Fife around 10.35am on Sunday, 13 February.

"The man was taken to hospital after he was assisted by Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and a HM Coastguard helicopter."
