Mountain Parkway expansion update: lane changes in Wolfe County, still no end date in sight

Motorists traveling through the Wolfe County portion of the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway will have to navigate lane switches at the Kentucky 1010 interchange for a few more months. That’s according to Aric Skaggs, the project manager for the expansion that’s four-laning the parkway from Campton to Prestonsburg.

“The travel was moved to the western ramps. Basically, this is to help expedite the project and help expedite the construction of the bridge at the interchange and the roadway there at the interchange.”

Skaggs said it’s too early to predict when the 10-year-old parkway expansion will be complete, due in part to uncertainty over state and federal funding.

“It’s too early to get to even give a ballpark. A lot of it depends on funding availability, and then going through the legislature in different legislative sessions. So it's, if I had a crystal ball, I'd love to give you an exact date, but I can't right now.”

Skaggs said when it is complete, travel on the parkway will be faster and safer and nearly all of it will have a median.
