Mountain Parkway expansion continues; officials caution motorists to be aware

State Transportation Cabinet officials are cautioning motorists who are eastbound on the Mountain Parkway to be alert to barriers at the new road leading to the twin bridges over Johnson Creek.

State Transportation Cabinet officials are cautioning motorists who are eastbound on the Mountain Parkway to be alert to barriers at the new road leading to the twin bridges over Johnson Creek. That’s in Magoffin County. Aric Skaggs is the state project manager for the Mountain Parkway expansion project.

"We have a series of barricades set up along the Mountain Parkway at that location to keep the motorists going traveling along existing Mountain Parkway. So, so they're not tempted to go along the other route, because it is a little bit confusing.”

The Mountain Parkway is 46 miles long and about two-thirds of that are being converted from two to four lanes. Skaggs said two portions are under construction now.

“One of the projects is the Wolfe County section. And the other project is in the Magoffin West section. The Wolfe Project, it's uh, it just got let to construction about a year ago. And so, we've still got a few more years of construction left on that timeline.”

A Transportation Cabinet news release said portions of the parkway expansion are complete in Morgan and Magoffin counties. The final bit of work, which will extend it about 13 miles from Salyersville to Prestonsburg, is under development.
