Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province has been actively erupting, spewing hot ash and volcanic materials into the air following a significant eruption earlier this week. The eruption resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives and left dozens injured.
The volcano's activity has intensified since the initial eruption on Monday, with the latest eruption sending a column of ash soaring up to 10 kilometers high. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation has reported that volcanic materials, including rocks, lava, and ash, have been ejected up to 8 kilometers from the crater.
Authorities have raised the alert status of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki to the highest level and expanded the danger zone to an 8-kilometer radius on the northwest and southwest slopes of the mountain. The volcanic activity has caused damage to schools, houses, and various buildings, including religious structures like convents, churches, and a seminary.
Efforts are underway to evacuate approximately 16,000 residents from the danger zone, as more than 10,000 people in 10 villages have already been affected by the eruptions. Thousands have sought refuge in emergency shelters, with over 2,300 houses and public facilities sustaining damage.
Rescue operations are ongoing to ensure the safety of all residents, with relief supplies being provided to nearly 6,000 displaced individuals in evacuation sites. The National Disaster Management Agency has announced plans to relocate the hardest-hit villagers within six months, offering compensation to affected families.
Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki is part of Indonesia's extensive volcanic landscape, with the country being home to 120 active volcanoes due to its location along the seismically active 'Ring of Fire.' The recent eruptions have prompted the closure of several airports in the region, affecting air travel and necessitating safety precautions.
