Motown legend Diana Ross leaves fans wanting more at her Durham show - quite literally

Music icon Diana Ross brought her Thank Your tour to the North East on Wednesday night and it quite literally left her fans wanting more.

The Motown legend performed to thousands of fans at Durham Riverside just days after headlining at Glastonbury but the show appeared to come to an abrupt end. Diana wrapped up after just one hour and before the final two songs of her expected set list.

However, there is absolutely no denying her star power. Diana had the crowd in the palm of her hand while she belted out her beloved hits at an impressive 78-years-old.

Diana arrived on stage just before 9pm opening with her iconic hit I'm Coming Out before moving onto songs such as My World is Empty Without You and Baby Love. It then really dawned on you that you were watching Diana Ross when she crooned Stop! In the Name of Love.

Diana has been subject to criticism with her recent performances at the Platinum Jubilee and Glastonbury. It was fair to say that she proved her critics wrong in Durham as she captivated the crowd with her still soulful vocals.

That being said, the sound could have done with being turned up a bit for those further back!

Diana is more diminutive in person that you would expect but she is still a powerhouse at almost 80. She was cheered by the crowd as she referenced her age and you just couldn't help but be impressed by her.

She was full of energy and moved around the stage effortlessly. Diana was decked out in a much more demure outfit than we're used to seeing wearing flats and a plaid shirt. She told the crowd that she fancied being "more casual".

For the most part, the atmosphere was joyous. Older ladies were dancing and having the time of their lives - even roping security guards into it and the audience sang along to her biggest hits at the top of their voices.

Encouraging the crowd to dance Diana came out with this pearl of wisdom: "You can't be unhappy if you move your body!"

Admittedly, Diana perhaps struggled slightly when performing the penultimate song Theme from Mahogany. She did tell the crowd she was feeling "hoarse" and there were vocally less strong moments.

However, as soon as she kicked off Ain't No Mountain High Enough, it was fantastic. Despite it not being her song originally, it's one you always associate with her and she definitely owns it when she performs it.

Diana was expected to perform two more songs after this but left the stage in a rather abrupt manner. Whether she was feeling too hoarse to go on or whether she expected the crowd to cheer her back on - who knows!

The sudden end left the crowd quite confused and many hung on sure she was going to reappear. But as soon as the crew began packing up the stage it was clearly game over.

Leaving the stadium a little disappointed, some fans could be heard praising her still and saying not many others could perform like her at her age. However some could be heard criticising how it ended and feeling a little let down.

However you felt about it, you couldn't deny that you have seen a living legend performing live at almost 80-years-old and that is not something you see every day!
