Motorway in Yorkshire at standstill with dead pigs in road

A motorway in South Yorkshire is at a standstill after being closed following a crash involving a lorry and a car. The incident has also led to dead pigs being scattered across the road, which witnesses call a 'massacre'.

Traffic has been brought to a stop on the M18 and M62 following a crash involving a lorry and a car at the interchange between two roads. Motorists in the area are facing significant delays with around five miles of traffic from the M62 interchange heading eastbound. These delays have been compounded by the works on the Ouse Bridge, HullLive reports.

The M18 was closed northbound while emergency services attend the scene at around midday on Thursday (April 14). Southbound traffic is also affected with two lanes closed from the M62 interchange heading south.

The lorry, which was carrying livestock, has spilled some of its cargo during the crash and now there are reports of multiple dead pigs being littered across the tarmac. It is understood that no members of the public have been seriously injured in the crash.

Speaking about the incident on a Goole Facebook page, Annie Hollowell said: "My fiancé is currently on this. There's been lorries and a car involved. A lorry was full with pigs, where the roof has been ripped off and there's dead pigs on both side of the motorway cutting it down to one lane. Apparently it's a massacre."

Passing motorist, Pete Heseltine, said: "It looked like three lorries and a car that had been involved in the crash. Two lanes had been closed on my side of the road and I was delayed by about 20 minutes.

"When I got nearer I realised the lanes were closed because three dead pigs had been thrown from the lorry onto our side of the motorway. There must have been another six or seven dead pigs on the other side - it was horrific."

Humberside Police have confirmed that they are in attendance at a road traffic collision at the M62 and M18 interchange. Traffic service Inrix is reporting the collision is between a car and a HGV.

The AA is reporting severe delays northbound as the stationary traffic is held near the scene of the accident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The M18 remains closed northbound, but all of the lanes southbound are now reopen.
