A motorway service station isn’t where you’d expect to find an amazing hotel, let alone one crowned ‘the best in the North’. Yet it’s where you’ll find the Westmorland Hotel which offers a tranquil escape from the hum of the M6.
The accommodation was named Best Hotel in the North in the Good Hotel Guide’s annual list of 12 César winners. Named after the Swiss hotelier, César Ritz, the awards are given to hotels, inns and B&Bs which excel in their category.
Westmorland Hotel, former Tebay Services Hotel, is nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and is less than a two-hour drive from Manchester. Whether it's used as a base to explore the nearby national parks, or as a stop off on a long drive up to Scotland, the hotel promises a good nights’ sleep and hearty food.

A second generation family business, the hotel began life in 1972 when the M6 was built through the Dunning family farm, which still supplies the beef and lamb. Food is a key part of the Westmorland Hotel experience.
The hotel works closely with local producers and uses high quality ingredients to create its seasonal menus. Fresh fish is delivered each day from Hartlepool from bread that comes from an award-winning bakery.
The restaurant boasts panoramic views, so you can admire the beautiful countryside while you tuck in to your meal. Guests can expect hearty Cumbrian breakfasts too.
A world away from your usual motorway hotel, the rooms at the Westmorland are more than just a place to sleep for the night, they’re also spaces to relax, recharge and enjoy your surroundings.
You can choose from the classic rooms or crafted rooms, which feature luxurious design touches including Harris Tweet headboards and artworks made by a local Yorkshire-based artist, James Bywood. All the rooms have super king-sized beds or twin singles, feather pillows and duvets, with mattresses made in Cumbria.
Despite its location right by the M6, you wouldn’t even know it was there as the hotel is set back from the road. If you’ve got a bit of time to spare and are in no rush to hit the road, there’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on the hotel’s doorstep.
