Motorola flip phone 2019: Is this a first look at the folding Motorola RAZR V4?

Leaked renders of how the Motorola RAZR V4 will look (Picture: SlashLeaks )

The internet went into overdrive when rumours about Motorola bringing back the flip phone went viral earlier this year before the company later confirmed the phone was happening in February.

Now, we’ve had our first look at how that folding screen version of the classic noughties mobile could look in real life.

Press renders of the Motorola RAZR V4 were leaked on the Chinese platform Weibo, before they were later uploaded to SlashLeaks. It demonstrates how Motorola looks to take on the folding screen genre, with a vertical folding phone just like the original RAZR used to look.

There’s a notch at the top of the phone which will house the front camera, as well as a rather substantial chin at the bottom of the phone which the phone will snap into. Other rumours point to a smaller screen on the front of the phone when it is folded, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, though unfortunately, these images don’t confirm that.

Inside the box there looks to be a phone case, a wireless charging stand, as well as a few other charging cables.

Motorola has said that the new flip phone will arrive “no later” than the other folding phones, namely Samsung and Huawei’s Mate X device.

However, this was before Samsung ran into screen issues with the Galaxy Fold. Journalists with review versions of the new device reported problems such as a defective hinge as well as constant screen flickering. When we received hands-on time with the Fold, though it is an exciting device with ground-breaking design, the screen fold is noticeable on the screen, something you probably don’t want when you’re spending £1,800 on a phone.

By comparison, Motorola’s version is rumoured to cost about £1,170.

Samsung has been forced to postpone the release of the Fold, following these reported screen issues. As for Huawei, there’s still no official word on when the Mate X will come to market, only that it will be “summer 2019”.

Either way, excitement is certainly building for the new Motorola flip phone.
