Motorists warned to avoid this 'really bad' hack to defrost car windscreens

As the cold snap continues, drivers are likely to see frosty windscreens but there's one "really bad" defrosting hack to avoid.

Met Eireann has warned of "severe" frost, ice on roads and freezing fog so many motorists will have to deal with frosted or icy windscreens.

There's many defrosting hacks doing the rounds at the moment, but the Road Safety Authority has warned that using hot water on frosty windscreens could cause damage to vehicles. They said: " “Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass.”

Meanwhile, expert Olly Jones, who co-founded the automotive industry Elmo, also urged motorists to avoid using hot water on their cars and he described it as a “bad idea”.

He told Express: “Putting boiling water on any type of glass can cause little cracks to form and can worsen existing cracks - and windscreens are no exception.

“If your windscreen has been hit by a stone you are at risk of massively worsening that crack. Cracked windscreens can be expensive and take time to fix. The best way to defrost your windscreen is by not allowing ice to form in the first place.”

There's actually a much safer and easy way of defrosting your windscreen, and this involves using a little known 'magic button' that defrosts your windscreen in seconds. UK company Driving Test Success recently shared a video on their TikTok account ( @drivingtestsuccess ) in which they explained you can clear ice cover by simply activating your car windscreen fan.

This button will heat up the glass from the inside and easily melt the frost away, reports the Irish Mirror. In the video, the company explained: "Frozen windscreen? Put the temperature on high. Put the front windscreen fan on max. The ice will start to melt from the heat. Wipe away excess water and return the fan to normal."
