One motorist is facing jail after being caught by gardai driving at a "deadly" speed on a busy Irish motorway.
Gardai in Co Cork observed a motorcyclist travelling at an enormous speed on the M8 in Fermoy.
The motorist was caught doing 225kph on the motorway, which gardai have said could prove fatal in an accident.
A post on the Garda Siochana - Cork, Kerry & Limerick - Southern Region Facebook page said: “This motorcycle was observed travelling at 225kph on the M8 Fermoy, Co Cork over the weekend.
“A collision at this speed would result in serious injury or death.
“You never know what hazards lie ahead.”
The driver of the motorcycle is now facing a large fine or jail time and will appear in court later this week.
“The driver was arrested and charged with Dangerous Driving to appear at Fermoy District Court this week,” the post said.
“They now face a fine up to €5000 and/or imprisonment for up to 6 months and disqualification from driving for two years.”
The Gardai finished the post: “Our message is simple: #ArriveAlive."
Many Facebook users were shocked at the driver’s speed. One commented: “Disgraceful behaviour on a public road.”
“Madness. Some people like dicing with death. Well done Garda Síochána,” another said.
“People who feel the need to do that speed should be on a racetrack. I hope he and others learn from this,” one user said.
