Motorist drove up M6 in dark with no headlights because they 'didn't know how to turn them on'

A motorist stopped by police for driving up the M6 in the dark with no headlights told officers they did not know how to turn them on. The unlit vehicle was spotted on the motorway in Lancashire by another road user, who reported it to the police.

The motorist then followed the dark car so they could keep officers informed of its location, Lancs Live reports. The vehicle was eventually intercepted by Cumbria police near Windermere in the Lake District.

The driver of the car was given a breathalyser test, which showed they had not been drinking. Instead they told officers they were visiting from overseas and simply did not know how to turn the headlights on in their rented vehicle.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "A car had travelled up the M6 in the dark, without any lights, and we came across it outside #Windermere. A concerned motorist had followed it and was relaying its location to Cumbria Police.

"Driver blew zero. Foreign tourist in hire car, didn’t know how to turn headlights on!"
