One Irish driver was caught driving 70km/h over the speed limit which marked the highest speed detected in one speed limit zone on Irish roads over the bank holiday.
An Garda Síochána had its road safety partners GoSafe out monitoring over 96,000 vehicles across the road network on Sunday as they work to make Irish roads safer.
A total of 544 drivers were detected driving well over the speed limit and will be issued with Fixed Charge Notices (FCNs), according to Gardaí.
The highest speed detected per speed limit zone was a motorist doing 170km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 in Ballyadam, Cork.
The other top speeds recorded on Sunday were:
- 131km/h in 80km/h R148 Kilmurry, Enfield, Meath
- 141km/h in 120km/h M11 Coolacork, Glenealy, Wicklow
- 90km/h in 50km/h Gracefield Road, Portarlington, Offaly

A post from An Garda Siochana confirmed: “Yesterday, our Road Safety Partners GoSafe monitored over 96,000 vehicles across the road network. 544 drivers were detected for speeding and will be issued with Fixed Charge Notices.”
In Ireland, it is an offence to drive over the speed limit so if you do, you will get 3 penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €80.
If you do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €120.
