A tourist visiting Troon shore has blasted South Ayrshire Council for being “excluded” from using motorhome facilities.
The holidaymaker, who wished to remain anonymous, was scouting out motorhome facilities in the area last week and found the ‘North Shore Road Car Park in Barassie’ on the council’s website - which stated it was open from April through to September and had facilities for both ‘collection of general waste’ and ‘collection of chemical waste’.
But upon arriving at the advertised car park - which was approved earlier this year to be trialled as motorhome parking - she was met with a two metre height restriction barrier, preventing her from entering and using the facilities.
She said: “It would seem, despite what’s stated on South Ayrshire Council’s website, we are being excluded from using the advertised motorhome facilities.
“I don’t know any motorhomes that would actually fit under a 2m barrier.
“Most motorhomes are over 2m - mine is 3.2m - and only campervans can get under the barrier in Troon.
“I also didn’t see the chemical waste facility, but even if it is there surely it’s dangerous to expect motorhomes to park on the main road while using facilities?
“What is the point in paying £10 if you can’t get in and use the facilities?”
Council chiefs have admitted there has been “a slight delay” in implementing facilities at the site, which will be up and running from the end of the month, with the barrier removed for the season.
Kevin Braidwood, Head of Roads at the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: “The motorhome bays in Troon, and Ballantrae, will be available from the end of April.
“When the scheme is in place, the barrier at the North Shore Road Car Park in Barassie will be removed to allow access, chemical waste facilities will also be in place.
“There has been a slight delay implementing the schemes in Troon and Ballantrae and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience, however the bays in Ayr and Girvan are available for use.”
