Motorcyclist taken to hospital with serious injuries following horror collision on A1 at Washington

A motorcyclist has been seriously injured following a horror collision with a barrier on the A1.

Emergency crews attended the incident on the A1 northbound near the slip road with the A194 at Washington following reports of a one-vehicle collision shortly before 2.30pm today. At the scene a man was found to have crashed into a barrier and had come off his bike.

The man was seriously injured in the incident but the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The casualty was subsequently taken to the RVI for further treatment.

A lane was closed on the A1(M) Northbound from J64 A195 Western Highway (Washington) to J65 A1 Western Bypass J65 (Birtley) while emergency crews were at the scene. All lanes have since been re-opened.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 2.30pm today we were made aware of a one-vehicle collision, involving a motorcycle on the A1 northbound near the slip road with the A194. It was reported a male rider has collided with the barrier and come off his bike, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers and emergency services are currently in attendance and motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision at Junction 65 of the A1 northbound at 2.15pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and a specialist paramedic, and transported one patient to the RVI for further treatment."
