Motorcyclist taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' after collision with car County Durham

A motorcyclist has been rushed to hospital after a serious collision with a car on Howden Bank in Lanchester, County Durham.

Durham Constabulary has confirmed it is dealing with a "serious road traffic collision" and that the motorcyclist was taken to hospital with "serious injuries". The police expect the road to be closed for several hours as an investigation continues.

North East Ambulance Service was also attended the incident. A spokesperson said they were alerted at 3.32pm and that an off-duty nurse had initially been at the scene.

The air ambulance were also scrambled, while the patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary's major trauma unit in Newcastle in a critical condition.

Durham Constabulary said in a statement: "We are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision between a car and a motorbike on Howden Bank, Lanchester. The motorcyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries and the road is expected to be closed for several hours whilst officers conduct their enquiries.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route. Thank you for your cooperation and patience."

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 15:32 this afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident involving a motorbike and a car on a junction of the A6076 at Maiden Law in Lanchester, Durham.

"An off duty nurse was at the scene. We sent a clinical team leader, the air ambulance, a rapid response paramedic, a specialist paramedic and an emergency ambulance crew. We took one patient to the RVI major trauma unit in a critical condition."
