Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries after collision with car in County Durham

A motorcyclist has suffered serious injuries after a crash involving a car in County Durham.

Emergency services attended the scene on Stockerley Lane near Lanchester following reports of a serious collision between a motorcycle and a car.

It is believed that the motorcyclist was travelling towards in the same direction as a dark-coloured BMW 5 series, when it struck the rear of the car.

The road was subsequently closed as police investigated and worked at the scene but has since re-opened.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed their attendance at the scene and stated that a casualty was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for more treatment.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We received a call at 4.51am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident on Stockerley Lane, Consett.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, three specialist paramedics, and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

One patient was treated and discharged on the scene, and another was taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision between a motorcycle and a car near Lanchester, at around 4.45am today.

"Officers believe a motorcyclist was travelling towards Consett, on Stockerley Lane, in the same direction as a dark-coloured BMW 5 series, when it struck the rear of the car.

"The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after falling from the bike.

"Officers are particularly keen to speak to the driver of what is believed to be a white coloured Transit-style van that is understood to have been behind the BMW just prior to the collision.

"The road was closed for closed for several hours while investigators worked at the scene. It has since reopened."

Witnesses or anyone with dash cam of the incident or of the motorcycle prior to the incident, are asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 53 of October 4.
