Motorcyclist seriously injured after being hit by car sparking huge 999 response in Durham

A motorcyclist has been seriously injured following a crash in Durham.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that police were called to a collision between a motorbike and a car at around 4.15pm on June 1 at the former New Inn crossroads near Church Street Head.

Paramedics, fire crews and police attended the scene and drivers were being warned to avoid the area as 999 crews responded to the incident. Assistance was also requested for the air ambulance to land at the crossroads.

The incident caused travel chaos during rush hour in Durham with police closing off sections of the crossroads with multiple vehicles in attendance. One patient was then taken by road to University Hospital of North Durham with their injuries described as "serious".

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 4.15pm, police were alerted to a collision between a motorcycle and a car at the former New Inn crossroads in Durham which left a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

“Emergency crews attended scene and a number of lane closures and diversions were in place at the crossroads, which caused significant traffic disruption.

"The road has now reopened."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the junction of the A177 Stockton Road with Church Street Head in Durham at 4.11pm on June 1. We dispatched one ambulance crew and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service, and transported one patient by road to University Hospital of North Durham."

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that one appliance from Durham arrived on scene at 4.24pm and were on the scene until 5.27pm.

The road reopened to traffic again at around 7pm.
