A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a van in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.

The crash happened at the intersection of Portrush Road and Edward Street at Evandale about 3.40pm.

The motorcycle, which was travelling north, hit a van travelling west and caught fire in the crash.

The 28-year-old man from Athelstone died at the scene.

The van driver, a 21-year-old Hove man, was not physically hurt but was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital as a precaution.

There were significant delays on Portrush Road as several lanes remain close. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area.
