MotoGP Argentina GP: Marc Marquez fights back to extend winning streak

Marc Marquez made it four victories out of four to start the 2025 MotoGP season by winning the Argentina Grand Prix at Termas de Rio Hondo on Sunday.

The six-time world champion fought a little harder for this win than the previous three, as he lost the lead to Alex Marquez for the middle part of the race following what appeared to be a genuine mistake. But he seized it back with four laps to go, so Marc’s younger brother Alex continued his 100% record of runner-up finishes in 2025.

Francesco Bagnaia’s start to the season went from average to worse as he failed to grab a fourth consecutive third-place finish. This time, the final podium spot went to the 2024 VR46 Ducati of Franco Morbidelli, with Bagnaia only fourth on the factory Ducati bike.

The race began in warmer conditions than Saturday’s sprint, but the outcome into Turn 1 was the same: Marc Marquez led Alex Marquez, with Marc’s team-mate Bagnaia slotting into third after Johann Zarco made another less than ideal start from the front row.

Behind them, Marco Bezzecchi went flying into the gravel trap after losing control into the first corner. The factory Aprilia took factory Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo with him, though the Frenchman was able to continue at the back of the field.

Zarco was able to limit the damage from his start to just one drop of position this time around, and initially settled in behind Bagnaia, even trying a couple of short-lived passes.

Both, however, were soon to be overtaken by a flying Morbidelli, who had gone against the grain by fitting the softer rear tyre. By lap five, the VR46 rider was in that final podium spot.

Morbidelli was able to take care of his tyres and hold on to take his first podium since the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix, as Bagnaia could not get close enough to threaten him for the rest of the race.

On lap four, meanwhile, Alex Marquez had passed his brother following a mistake from Marc, who ran deep into the first corner.

The Gresini Ducati Marquez then settled into a lead for many laps, albeit with Marc in his shadow. Signs were, however, that Marc was not going to breeze back past as he had in Thailand.

Marc had his first serious look at regaining the lead on lap 18, but outbraked himself at Turn 5 and had to regather himself for another attempt.

That came four tours later on lap 22, and this time it looked a breeze for the older Marquez. Marc simply galloped past Alex on the main straight, then proceeded to stamp his authority on the rest of the race.

His lead was over a second two laps later, and the result was in no doubt from then on. Marc crossed the line 1.362s ahead of his brother to establish a 16-point championship lead.

Behind Morbidelli and Bagnaia came the second VR46 rider, Fabio di Giannantonio, who launched a late attack and snatched fifth from Zarco on the last lap.

Unlike on Saturday, Brad Binder stayed aboard his KTM and registered a solid seventh place.

Star of the Thai Grand Prix Ai Ogura was eighth after a stellar ride through from 15th on the starting grid.

Pedro Acosta (KTM) and Joan Mir (Honda) battled almost the entire distance, with ninth place ultimately falling to the KTM rider.
