Motherwell star Paul McGinn was left frustrated, but backs himself to score

Paul McGinn insists he’d back himself to score at least one of the chances he missed against Hearts, and said it left Motherwell looking like they were battered.

The Jambos ran out 3-0 winners at Fir Park yesterday afternoon, with Lawrence Shankland’s 18th-minute opener added to in the second half by an Alan Forrest double.

Motherwell passed up 26 chances throughout the 90 minutes, and defender McGinn was responsible for two of those, blazing over in the first half and hitting the post in the second.

The 31-year-old said: “It looks as if we’ve been battered 3-0, so it’s really frustrating.

“I actually think the big moment is my miss, I think if you give me that 100 times I’ll score about 95 but it came off my heel a bit.

“Even then, I still thought it was going in, but it hits the post, but these things happen, you need to put it to bed.

“Most of the time I score, or Kevin van Veen scores, and these things go in.

“It’s frustrating, and there’s zero point in dwelling on it, but we need to take these chances.

“I’m sure that’s what the manager will be working on during the week – I bet there will be quite a few finishing drills in this week’s training.”

McGinn added: “The actual balls into the box were good, it was just our finishing.

“It was the same against Dundee United [in a 0-0 draw two weeks ago], and we need to start taking them.”

Next up for Motherwell is a trip to Celtic Park, who were unexpectedly defeated 2-0 at St Mirren on Sunday.

While McGinn reckons the Glasgow giants will have a point to prove on October 1, so do Motherwell.

He said: “Celtic got beat so they’re on ‘bad form’ – one defeat in about three million games!

“They play us next, so there you go – I’m sure they won’t have a reaction to that!

“But we need to as well, and we have a point to prove.

“I think teams are still coming here realising they need to play well to get something, or ride their luck, but we need to prove that.

“I feel that we’re in a better place, and if we had taken one or two of our chances yesterday we would have looked like a right good team.”
