Motherwell star explains Hearts exit and the variety factor that can make up for Tony Watt's departure

Motherwell forward Jordan Roberts says it was a simple decision to sign for the club permanently from Hearts - but how his first game following the decision panned out frustrated him.

Roberts has spent most of the last year on loan at Fir Park from the Jambos. Having impressed in the second half of last season, he returned for the opening half of this campaign.

It was announced before the Steelmen's return to Premiership action against Ross County on Tuesday that the attacker had signed permanently and he netted a tremendous goal.

But it mattered little in the end as the Staggies wheeled away 3-1 winners with 10 men after Jordan Tillson's straight red card. The Steelmen are still fourth in the league.

Roberts said: “It was a good goal and it is always nice to score, but it would have been nicer to go back down the road with a point or three.

“So in the end I am disappointed with that. But to be fit and healthy and back playing again is great and I want to contribute for the second half of the season.

“It’s great to have my future sorted out and I enjoy it at Motherwell. It’s been a tough season as it has been a bit stop start for me.

“It’s about consistency for me now and trying to do it on a regular basis. I want to get goals and assists for the team who are in a great position in the league right now.

“We want to kick on and we have the players in the dressing room to do that. We have shown how good we are and we know at this stage of the season we need to fight for everything.”

Roberts will be tasked with helping fill the void left by Tony Watt. The club's top scorer has joined league rivals Dundee United but the 'Well star reckons the team can cope.

He added: “Since I have been here we have had goals from all over the park, midfielders, defenders and attackers.

“Of course we will miss Tony as he was a quality player. But it’s part and parcel of football in that players move on.

“Now we just have to carry on for the second half of the season. The way the gaffer plays suits me. He gives me the chance to score goals.

“As a wide player you have to contribute and to play for this team you have to be fit and have the right mentality.

“I’m learning all the time on the pitch and off it from the gaffer and I’m happy here. Now it’s all sorted I can get my head down and work hard for the rest of the season.”
