Motherwell sign Sligo Rovers defender who helped knock them out of Europa Conference League

Motherwell have confirmed the signing of defender Shane Blaney from Sligo Rovers on a two-and-a-half year contract.

The 23-year-old Irishman played a major role in the Steelmen's early exit from the UEFA Europa Conference this season when he netted a stunning free-kick in the second leg of Motherwell's qualifying round defeat.

His display across the two legs, which Motherwell lost 3-0 on aggregate, left a big impression and Fir Park boss Steven Hammell has swooped to prise him away from the League of Ireland Premier side.

Blaney, whose previous clubs include Finn Harps and Doncaster Rovers, has signed from January and will not be eligible for this Friday's clash with Kilmarnock and the trip to Ibrox to face Rangers on December 28.

Fir Park gaffer Steven Hammell told the club website: "Shane is someone who we have watched closely since that European tie where I felt he played very well in both legs.

“He has had an impressive season with Sligo and we think he can continue that upward trajectory with us at Fir Park.

"He will give us additional competition in defensive areas and will push the likes of Lamie, Solholm and Mugabi for a start.”

On his move to North Lanarkshire, Blaney said: "This is a really exciting move for me.

“I’ve loved my time at Sligo and want to continue to improve and add to my game here at Motherwell.

“There is a lot of really talented players in this squad already and I can’t wait to get going.”
