Motherwell set for £300,000 windfall as player 'on verge of joining Austrian giants'

Motherwell are in line to pocket more than £300,000 if Max Johnston's move to Austrain giants Sturm Graz goes through.

The Fir Park full-back is yet to sign a new deal with the club as he pursues a lucrative move away from ML1.

And it is being reported that the 19-year-old is being offered a four-year contract with Graz, which would see the Steelmen bring in the tidy sum in training compensation.

Johnston joined Motherwell as a 12-year-old and came through the academy before making his first team debut in 2021 against Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Accies in a Premiership clash.

He has gone on to make 23 first team appearances but in that number of games - which followed loan spells at Queen of the South and Cove Rangers over the last two season - he has earned many admirers. And his displays during the second half of last season earned him the Scottish Football Writers' Young Player of the Year award.

Cash from an expected transfer of Johnston would be very welcome, as Motherwell seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premiership season last month.

The club have already sold star striker Kevin van Veen, who had a year left on his contract, to Dutch side FC Griningen for a fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.

At the time, Fir Park chiefs stated they reluctanctly let van Veen go but added that "player trading is required to ensure we are financially stable over the medium and long term."
