‘Goal-hungry’ Louise Moult admits he has lost sleep over disallowed goals since returning to Motherwell, but hopes he’s now off the mark.
The 30-year-old netted his first goal since returning to Fir Park on loan from Burton Albion in the 3-2 defeat at Hearts on Sunday, and reckons he’s building a fruitful partnership with Kevin van Veen.
He said: “I’ve been losing sleep over not scoring. I think you know me as a person from the first time, I’m goal-hungry and that hasn’t changed.
“I felt hard done-by on two disallowed goals that I’ve scored since I’ve been back at the club, but it was important that I put that to the back of my mind and tried to score.
“I thoroughly believed that I was going to score if I was going to come on.
“Fair play to Kev, he let me take the penalty, said I won it and to get myself a goal.
“I massively appreciated that, it was nice of him, and I’d do the exact same thing for him, vice-versa, and I think that speaks of the relationship we’ve got, on and off the pitch.”
Moult says he’s feeling sharper and believed he could come on and score against Hearts.
He said: “I’ve had a good week’s training, I think that was key, and I felt really sharp when I was on the pitch.
“I think when the ball came up to me and Kev we linked up well, and I thought we were causing them all sorts of problems.
“Hopefully that gives me a bit of momentum now, going into the next two games before the break, and I’m goal-hungry now, I want to score as many goals as I can for this club.
“We’ve got two more games to get positive results from, and that’s what we need to focus on now.”
Moult was left frustrated as ’Well pulled the score back to 2-2 with Blair Spittal’s strike, only for Lawrence Shankland to score a late penalty winner.
Jorge Grant had been red-carded in 38 minutes, but that didn’t stop Andy Halliday scoring in 45 and 55 minutes to give the 10 men a two-goal lead.
“It’s a kick in the teeth,” he said.
“Coming off the bench, I felt like we were going to get back in the game, and we did, but ultimately the overall feeling is disappointment at the end.
“I think it’s difficult to say you played really well when you lose the game 3-2, and they’ve got 10 men for such a long period of time.
“Last week, Dundee United had 10 men and we almost suffered for it, so it’s something we need to look at as a football club and I’m sure the gaffer and all the management will be studying that.
“We need to think about how we can adjust if it is the opposite team that go down to 10 men, and see where we can create that extra man.
“If I’m honest I felt that we probably got too desperate and that left us vulnerable at the back.”
Moult insists the penalty he won was justified, but says he was so focused on scoring it didn’t occur to him that keeper Craig Gordon might have been sent off.
“In real-time I didn’t even realise that he was on a yellow, so I didn’t say a word,” he said.
“I was just concentrating on scoring the penalty.
“It’s decisions I can’t make, so it’s not up to me to say anything.
“It’s a definite penalty, I think he knows that and everyone else really knows that. He catches me when I take the ball round him – simple as.”
