Motherwell boss: We got some big calls against us today against Hibs

Motherwell boss Stevie Hammell says his side were robbed of big decisions as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Hibs at Easter Road, and felt they deserved to take something from the game.

The game hinged on a huge decision for referee Grant Irvine to send off Connor Shields for a foul on Ryan Porteous in 56 minutes, 11 minutes before the Hibs defender headed in the winner.

But Hammell says his side were denied a penalty for a foul on Shields at the start of the second half, and midfielder Blair Spittal was taken to hospital following a hefty collision in the first half, that the gaffer hinted could have left him with rib damage.

He said: "I think we deserved to take something from that. I felt like in the first half there was not a lot in it, it was a bit too open, which we thought it was going to be. We knew it was going to be an expansive game.

"We made a few tactical tweaks at half time, which I felt were working, and we got more control at the start of the game.

"But then a couple of big moments in the game went against us, and it was a hard one from there.

"But even after that I felt like we still had a lot of the game, and we finished with three strikers on the pitch to try and get something but I'm just disappointed."

On the red card, Hammell said: "I think we should deal with it better. Our set-up from corners changed slightly because Spittal came off in the first half, so it's something we could have prevented at source.

"But from our point of view we could have done better.

"We had a strong penalty claim in the second half. It is a penalty when you watch it back, another one of the big moments in the game that didn't go our way.

"Connor Shields turns the ball round the corner, gets taken out, so again it didn't go our way.

"I thought we played well. It has been a tough week, three tough away games, we've came through them with a few issues, a few problems.

"Blair Spittal has to go to hospital from a bad tackle again, it was another big moment that again went against us.

"But we'll regroup, we'll get better for it, assess it and hopefully improve from it."

Hammell was fuming with the challenge on Spittal, which left the former Ross County star writhing on the Easter Road turf, with what looked like a back injury.

He said: "I didn't think it was a particularly good challenge on him either, but again we need to be careful what we're saying.

"It's the follow-through, another collision with his ribs, and potentially other damage, so he's at hospital just now and we'll hopefully figure out today what the damage is."
