Motherwell boss Steven Hammell is hopeful of adding "one of two more" fresh faces at Fir Park after securing Sligo Rovers defender Shane Blaney on a two-and-half year deal earlier this week.
The Steelmen have swooped to get some transfer business wrapped up ahead of the window opening and Irish defender Blaney is already working with his new team-mates ahead of being available for selection from New Year's Day.
Hammell knows his side are light in many areas, with injuries also taking their toll, and he is far from finished with his January recruitment drive.
Ahead of tomorrow night's Premiership clash at home to Kilmarnock, Hammell said: "I think it is obvious we need to do that [bring more players in].
"We are quite short and that has been the case the whole time, but we are not in the position where we can flood the place with five or six new players.
"We'd like to do that, but that isn't possible so we need to be creative, be confident and do as much work as we can, which we have been doing, and make sure we bring in one or two more.
"Every day and every night we are looking at targets and the landscape changes on a daily basis.
"We are looking to do business but it is difficult to find someone to fit into the way we play which will also fit into the financial restrictions that we are working with as well.
"Hopefully between now and the end of January we will have another couple in."
Blaney arrives having helped knock Motherwell out of Europe in the summer, netting a stunning free-kick as Sligo ran out 3-0 winners on aggregate during a UEFA Conference League second round qualifier in July.
It was a result that led to Hammell's appointment, as he replaced Graham Alexander in the days that followed the Sligo humiliation, and he knows the qualities Blaney can bring.
He added: "We are happy about that signing. He brings good competition straight away for a position we are quite short in at the moment.
"I think he fits into the short, medium and long-term plans for the club and I think there is improvement that can be made there as well.
"He is a good player and someone we have highlighted when we first came in.
"He has been in working with us and he is looking good.
"As soon as January comes he will come into the competition [for places]."
The Steelmen are set for their first game since the break for the World Cup and having seen last week's scheduled clash at home to St Mirren postponed due to flooding damage at Fir Park, the Kilmarnock game is fully expected to go ahead.
