Motherwell boss sets ultimate Scottish Cup target as he insists Hibs clash only the next step

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander isn't bothered about a potential trip to Hampden - as the key Scottish Cup objective will not be achieved.

The Steelmen were knocked out of the competition at the quarter-final stage last year in a penalty shootout defeat to Hibs. They'll do it all again this Sunday at Fir Park for a stage in this year's last four.

Alexander's men haven't won a Premiership match in 2022 but have won twice in this competition against Morton and Aberdeen.

Despite the lure of a trip to the national stadium, Alexander says victory over Hibs will only be the next step on their way to what they hope is silverware for the first time since 1991.

He explained: "I am always cautious of building things up as our ambition isn't just to get to Hampden. Four teams get there. Our target is to win a trophy.

"The next stage is Hampden but we don't want to build things up that if we win on Sunday, we set out what we aimed to achieve at the start of this competition.

"We just have to focus on what we have to put into the game. There are a couple of things going against us at the minute which we can control.

"We have to take control of those and if we do, the other things we are doing well will see us start winning games."

The Steelmen are sweating on the fitness of Mark O'Hara after he picked up a niggle prior to this weekend's match.

Nathan McGinley is one player who will definitely miss out according to Alexander while midfielder Barry Maguire is still out long-term.

Alexander added: "Mark O'Hara has picked up a little injury, it's just a niggle. He will hopefully train on Saturday and hopefully after that he's available.

"Nathan McGinley isn't back. We are waiting on his progress. The spirit has been good and the camaraderie has been good. We will need that this Sunday."
