Motherwell boss embraces pressure as he states players have 'had that since the age of 10'

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander says he isn't concerned over his players' desire for the Premiership's top six.

On an 11-game winless run, the Fir Park club are looking for their first league win of 2022 when former boss Stephen Robinson and St Mirren come to ML1 on Saturday.

A victory would provide a massive boost to their chances while a loss would strike a critical blow into their chances.

Under the 50-year-old's guidance, Motherwell picked up more points than any other Premiership side in 2021, so Alexander is calm in the knowledge his team can secure wins.

But he's well aware that ultimately, results will prove the ultimate judgement.

The former Scotland international said: "We have a good team of good players. We know we have had a difficult period but we understand the quality we have in the players. They are working hard to win.

"We have proven we can win games in this division. This is our first real tough period since I came in last year. We won a lot of games in the first 12 months and showed what we can do.

"We like to be positive and focus. We have good characters. I look at the way they train and there's nothing that concerns me over them not wanting to win games of football.

"Unity is important no matter where you are in the league, and we have that. But the proof is in the pudding."

The 'Well boss won't be putting additional pressure on the match for his players, as they know what is at stakes, just like other points in their careers.

He added: "I want my players to relax. We want them to understand what's needed as there's pressure on every game of football. We put pressure on them in training and they are used to that.

"They've had that since the age of 10 when they've been trying to get into a team, or earn a professional living. So you are always living that pressure.

"We always have pressure to succeed so we have to engage with that. We need to enjoy that we feel alive because we are in a position to fight."
