Motherwell Athletics Club's 'milestone moment' as they mark historic race

Motherwell Athletic Club members celebrated a milestone moment after marking their 200th Monthly Championship Four Mile Time Trial Race.

The club started the race back in October 2004 after they made Strathclyde Park their training base and the handicap event is a mix of serious threshold running and fun for those who are not quite so fit.

And as the club marked their big occasion on Tuesday, May 31, they had a superb turnout with 32 competitors involved and eight helpers.

First male across the line was Gary Wood in 37:01 and first female was Mae McIsaac in 31:54, while Douglas Samson picked up the wooden spoon in good humour.

Some fine racing was had, but records remained intact.

The record holders for the event are:

Female - Jessie Miller 24:33, set in June 2005.

Male - Stuart Gibson 20:22 in February 2006.

MAC endurance coach Joe Hoolaghan said: “On the back of a heavy weekend of racing, the race had a bigger element of fun about it this month.

“Unfortunately the weather was not on our side and the rain poured down for the duration of the race.

“But Charla Hands provided us with some fantastic commemorative biscuits, cookies and muffins and there was a special mention for Lucy Hamilton who is leaving us for Australia in July. “

Another source of pride for the club is Stuart Gibson, a former athlete with Motherwell AC who now lives in Australia and is considered the best Ultra runner ever Down Under, having finished 11th in the famous Marathon des Sables.
