Mother of Oxford High School shooter testifies about son's mental health

Aftermath of shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan

In Pontiac, Michigan, Jennifer Crumbly, the mother of Ethan Crumbly, the convicted shooter in the Oxford High School incident, took the stand in her defense as she faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Testifying in court, she shed light on various aspects of her son's life, addressing concerns about his mental health and detailing the healthcare measures taken during his upbringing.

During her testimony, Crumbly revealed that her son's phone was confiscated on multiple occasions due to missing assignments and poor grades. However, she denied ever believing that he required professional mental health treatment, explaining that while Ethan expressed anxiety about tests and his future plans, it did not reach a level that warranted immediate intervention.

Crumbly also mentioned contacting Ethan's school counselor when he exhibited distress regarding his uncertain career path and his stress about getting into college. She clarified that this was not related to mental health but rather a means to address his current issues. Ethan had contemplated joining the military and expressed aspirations in video game design and owning a car shop.

When it came to his physical health, Crumbly disclosed that he received medical attention primarily for common ailments such as headaches and illnesses. Routine doctor visits were sought, but only when necessary, and virtual doctor's consultations were also utilized when feasible. The family had insurance coverage until October 2021, after which they planned to add Ethan to their health insurance. Unfortunately, this remained unresolved at the time of the tragic incident.

Furthermore, Crumbly recounted her son's dental problems, including headaches caused by an underbite. He received braces in eighth grade, which, although challenging due to his oral hygiene habits, resolved his headache issues. However, he developed multiple cavities, prompting the temporary removal of the wires for treatment until they could be reattached.

The defense presented various exhibits, detailing the healthcare measures taken to address Ethan's physical health concerns over the years.

Jennifer Crumbly's testimony aimed to provide insight into her son's background and the steps taken to address his health and well-being. As the trial continues, the court will carefully consider this testimony in assessing her culpability in the tragic events that unfolded at Oxford High School.
