Mother of Jeffrey Dahmer victim says abhorrent Halloween costume profits should go to families

The mother of a Jeffrey Dahmer victim has slammed the wearing of costumes in tribute to the infamous serial killer this Halloween, saying proceeds of sales should go directly to victims' families.

85-year-old Shirley Hughes told American publication TMZ that it's already 'triggering' enough to see Netflix pushing a new series about Dahmer, never mind people dressing like the Milwaukee Cannibal Killer himself.

Hughes also spoke openly to various organizations about how she cannot believe that the show - which has accrued over 700 million hours of watch time - was allowed to be made to begin with.

Speaking to the Guardian, she said: "I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there," before going on to criticise the plot by adding: "It didn't happen like that."

And while the dramatized series may have been a bitter enough pill to swallow for Shirley and her family, the fact that DIY Dahmer costumes have been cropping up on the likes of eBay have made matters worse. According to TMZ, she feels as though 'all the eBay ads should be taken down...or at the very least, give the profits to the families'.

Shirley was the mother of Anthony 'Tony' Hughes, Dahmer's twelfth victim in his murder spree dating from June 1978 to July 1991 - many of whom, the killer committed necrophilic acts on and consumed. Her son's tale made for especially difficult viewing, with many complaining about how the tragic fate of the deaf 31-year-old was depicted on screen.

The new Netflix series detailing Dahmer's life and crimes was put together by horror auteur Ryan Murphy, who is behind the hugely popular American Horror Story franchise.

And Murphy didn't shy away from detailing some of the most bone-chilling parts of the infamous killer's sickening activities - including scenes where the cannibal attempts to feed his neighbour a sandwich filled with human flesh.

Netflix previously said the show aims to shine 'a spotlight on the as-yet untold stories of Dahmer’s victims, the people who tried to stop him, and the systemic failures that enabled him to continue his murderous spree for over a decade'.
