A mum has been arrested and charged after her child was found dead and injured in their home.
The 6-year-old girl named Jalaeyah Eason was found dead and bruised in her apartment in the Bronx, New York.
Police arrested the mother-of-three, Lynija Eason, who has been charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Eason called 911 just before 4am last Friday to seek help saying her child is not breathing.
Emergency services that rushed to the scene found the child unresponsive with marks on her wrist and torso.
She was taken to a hospital where she was tragically pronounced dead.
Police sources described that the apartment was filthy when they arrived.
Jalaeyah's siblings, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl found in the home, also had signs of bruising and restraint marks.
The 8-year-old told the police that his mother had hit him before, CBS News reported.
Neighbours expressed shock and heartbreak over the death of the 6-year-old and the alleged abuse inflicted on her and her siblings.
They described the incident as disgusting and expressed deep sadness, even though they did not personally know the family well.
One neighbour mentioned hearing the children crying and running back and forth, with their screams being deafening at times.
She said: "Anyone who lives enough can hear those kids from time to time."
Another neighbour emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the situation, particularly for someone who is a mother and understands the pain involved.
The exact cause of Jalaeyah's death is yet to be determined by a medical examiner.
Eason is currently held in custody, and her other two children are under the custody of the Administration for Children's Services.
Sources told CBS News that the mother has two prior Administration for Children's Services cases involving the 8-year-old and one prior arrest, though it's unclear for what.
